That leads me to my last question, how many of you use the 42" deep Karlby as a desk? I like it because I may eventually switch to a 40" 4k monitor which I know I will need to sit further back from, plus the extra work space would be nice. But will this be high quality and last me a decade? Should I skip the bekants and go with some of the other drawer units I like and some adjustable legs? I may end up arm mounting my monitors, can the partial particle board Karlby handle that strain? I'd love to go solid wood with the Hammarp, but I've fallen in love with the 42" depth Karlby, and it seems to be the only countertop option at ikea that offers that. So at this point I am looking at $700+ for 2 pieces of wood and 2 frames.
I figure after all that, and after hearing of possible sagging with the karlby, I figure why not just go with 2 of these I've found some other units I like, but they aren't as deep and would require legs as well probably. I am not a fan of the alex drawers units a lot of people use to the support the desk. Karlby 25" depth counter either 74 or 98", haven't decided yet: I am currently looking at the following for an L shaped desk: A drill/driver is the only tool you really need, but a pipe wrench comes in handy for tightening all of the pieces.
I mentioned my ideas spiraling out of control, and I will explain. Precut pipe lengths and off-the-shelf countertop make this pipe desk easy to plan and build in a couple of hours. But I started seeing all these "ikea hack" desks on /r/battlestations and also here. I want to build myself a nice big desk, and my ideas have expanded and perhaps even spiraled out of control the more I look.
