Once you're happy, clamp the straight edge down.Īlign the saw up with the line and the straight edge. Your circular saw will have a notch on it which lines up with the blade, you can either align this with the line on the tape and then butt the straight edge up against it OR use the rule to measure it and align the straight edge up that way. Measure and mark up again (always good to measure more than once) this time you'll be marking the tape. Measure where you want to make your cut with the pencil (pen is fine pencil will write on more surfaces) then tape up over the marked line and a good 50mm either side (protection from marks and also helps minimise any splintering) I have a 74' KARLBY with 2x 24' monitors and a laptop on its. Only put something as heavy as a tower directly over a support. I assume the tower (s) will have its weight over one of the ALEXs, which is fine. Put the worktop down, veneer side up (the saw is more likely the splinter the underside of the cut) Ikea sells single legs (GODVIN and ADILS, for example) that should be the same height as an ALEX. And something sturdy to do all the work on. The shelf becomes one with the wall thanks to the concealed mounting hardware.

They come in white, gray, blue, black-brown and gray-turquoise. Delivery Enter your ZIP code for delivery availability. The units are 27.5 inches tall, which is just about in the standard desk height range (most studies suggest the sweet spot for most people is 28 to 30 inches). A pencil and rule wouldn't go amiss either. The Alex drawers pull double duty as the desks legs and storage. See all buffet tables, sideboard buffets & buffet cabinets. You can also create an inspiring display on top with your favorite things. Place sideboards close to where the action is so your dinnerware, games and work-from-home stuff are easy to grab. I like my plans, but its a lot of money and I want to make sure it makes sense and is worth it.Did this exact thing at the weekend, they supply it was two additional pieces of self adhesive veneer for the ends.Ī circular saw, straight edge (one that's going to cover the width of the worktop, so 700mm will do it) a couple of clamps, tape measure, sandpaper (anything <120 grit) and some masking tape. Display and store with easy-reach sideboards. I could also save like $110 by going with the Oak Karlby instead of the Walnut, the oak will probably a closer match to my woodwork as well, but I am not a fan of that color for a desktop I don't think. But I am paying a lot extra for that 42" opposed to the other 25" tables, trying to decide if its worth it. But I could put my computer on the 25" deep side for now. But I guess until I switch to the 40", it will also have me sitting farther away from my current 23" monitors, that could be a problem.

That leads me to my last question, how many of you use the 42" deep Karlby as a desk? I like it because I may eventually switch to a 40" 4k monitor which I know I will need to sit further back from, plus the extra work space would be nice. But will this be high quality and last me a decade? Should I skip the bekants and go with some of the other drawer units I like and some adjustable legs? I may end up arm mounting my monitors, can the partial particle board Karlby handle that strain? I'd love to go solid wood with the Hammarp, but I've fallen in love with the 42" depth Karlby, and it seems to be the only countertop option at ikea that offers that. So at this point I am looking at $700+ for 2 pieces of wood and 2 frames.

I figure after all that, and after hearing of possible sagging with the karlby, I figure why not just go with 2 of these I've found some other units I like, but they aren't as deep and would require legs as well probably. I am not a fan of the alex drawers units a lot of people use to the support the desk. Karlby 25" depth counter either 74 or 98", haven't decided yet: I am currently looking at the following for an L shaped desk: A drill/driver is the only tool you really need, but a pipe wrench comes in handy for tightening all of the pieces.

I mentioned my ideas spiraling out of control, and I will explain. Precut pipe lengths and off-the-shelf countertop make this pipe desk easy to plan and build in a couple of hours. But I started seeing all these "ikea hack" desks on /r/battlestations and also here. I want to build myself a nice big desk, and my ideas have expanded and perhaps even spiraled out of control the more I look.
